Stand-Up For the kids – Programs and Classes
Stand-Up For The Kids youth programs are an ongoing series of events and classes that will inspire each student to make healthy choices, focus on physical activities and stay fit as they learn the fundamentals of stand-up paddle boarding, water safety practices, paddling warm up exercises, stretching, advanced racing techniques, posture and balance, as well as the water code of ethics as it relates to the use of a personal watercraft.
Students are exposed to the ecology of very diverse wildlife and their habitats on the Florida inter-coastal waterways. Children experience and learn to expand their knowledge on the importance of conserving and protecting the environment while contributing to our waterway, river and canal “Clean-Up” program. Each student participates and is directly involved in the removal of trash and debris. The program teaches and develops social responsibility necessary for the conservation of wildlife and their habitats.
Our program also educates on the laws affecting the use of a personal water craft in Fort Lauderdale while engaging in competitive relays, social interactions and other activities of ecological and recreational value to help foster a clean environment, and to teach children standards for healthy living and other important life-lesson building blocks that are important to an aspiring adult.
Introduction to curriculum
Stretching and exercises:
Focus on stretching and relaxing the appropriate muscle groups and stabilizer muscles will facilitate the learning process by knowing exactly what muscles will be triggered once students are standing on the paddle board. (Safe and effective body usage) Knowing what to expect helps prepare the students to familiarize themselves with proper technique stance and posture.

• Use of larger torso muscles
Our safety instructions begin with a detailed explanation and demonstration on what to do when you fall off your Stand-up paddle board and a proper and correct method on how to get back on. Where to paddle and where not to paddle your board is also discussed. What to do when you encounter boats and other motorized water traffic. A detailed explanation on Stand-up Paddle board personal watercraft safety laws and code of ethics when using a paddle board beyond the limits of the swimming, surfing or bathing area. The importance to be as prepared as you would be when using what is considered a traditional vessel which includes:
-Be a competent swimmer and have mastered basic swimming skills
-Wear a lifejacket and bring a whistle
-self rescue techniques
-Learning how to tow another paddle board
-Understanding local regulations and navigation rules
-Understand the elements and hazards – winds, tidal ranges, current, terrain
-Know when to wear a leash
-Being defensive – don’t go where you aren’t supposed to be and avoid other swimmers, boaters, paddle boards
Fundamentals and demonstrations of Stand-up Paddle boarding:
Detailed instructions will be given on getting on the stand-up paddle board, positioning, stance (prone • Sitting • Kneeling • Neutral stance with variation/slight stagger • Board stance- legs act independently from upper body, head/torso remain over center of board, posture, technique, paddle strokes, recovery, control and correction , race stance, power strokes, stopping, turning, and gliding will be taught in this class. Rotating groups will practice Stand-up paddling with an instructor through a program that increases each group’s skill level as they progress through the course.
Advanced Flat-Water maneuvers:
• Spins (onside and offside) boards pivots in place with or without Submerged tail
Practice Relay Course:
Every student will have the opportunity to paddle, practice, train and complete a predetermined relay course, allowing students a chance to apply and practice these instructions. This is where the Paddle boarding coach makes individual corrections and technique adjustments, that will perfect the student’s ability to paddle efficiently, safely and receive the maximum whole body health benefits by utilizing proper form and technique.
Paddleboard Relay Races:
The course will allow the students to apply their new skills to a “fun” and final relay race to show off their new abilities.
